Published in 1895, The Time Machine is a dystopian, post-apalyptic science fiction novel about a Victorian-era scientist, known only as The Time Traveller, who builds a machine to travel into the future where he finds humanity has evolved into two distinct species: The gentle, surface-dwelling Eloi and the subterranean, brutish Morlocks.
